Yesterday our little sweetheart went to the dentist to have is aching tooth looked at. It turned out he had the beginning of a cavity on molar, which they put a filling in without drilling. It's not easy drilling into a two-year old's tooth... Hopefully that will do the trick.
We also found out that he has poor enamel quality in all his teeth, and will keep continuous flouride treatment to try to improve them or at least keep it under control.
And all of this is "my fault". Not directly, of course, but the dentist said that if the mother is ill or has a lack of minerals during the first stages of the pregnancy it will effect the teeth forming in the foetus. Seeing as I wasn't actually ill, we suspect that I had hypothyroidism even then - without us knowing it - and that is what has caused the poor enamel.
My first reaction, being a mother, was to feel guitly and to think "what have I done". Totally irrational, of course, seeing as I hadn't a clue about it then and only just found out and got medicine for it.
With him not eating sweets, that isn't a problem, but we have to be even more restrictive with the dried fruits he's had instead of sweets. He's now allowed citrus fruits, because they're very acidy and that effects the enamel; and can't drink juice for the same reason.
If he has fruit, we're not to brush his teeth straight away afterwards, because the acid in the fruits affects the enamel, and with the tooth brush added to it it's not good.
I now totally understand why he has hated having his teeth cleaned - it must have hurt like mad! Poor little thing...
When I see the midwife next time, I'll have to see if there's anything I should to avoid the baby having the same problem - if it's not already too late. At least I'm on meds for my thyroid now...
